Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire is a 2009 American drama film directed by Lee Daniels. Precious is an adaptation by Geoffrey S. Fletcher of the 1996 novel Push by Sapphire. The film’s mainly female cast features Gabourey Sidibe as the title character, with Mo’Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz in supporting roles. The film marked the acting debut of Sidibe. Up is a 2009 American computer-animated comedy-drama, action-adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The film premiered on May 29, 2009 in North America and opened the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first animated or 3D film to do so. District 9 is a 2009 science fiction thriller film directed by Neill Blomkamp. It was written by Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell, and produced by Peter Jackson. The film stars Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope and David James. Copley plays the role of Wikus Van De Merwe,[3] an Afrikaner bureaucrat assigned to relocate a race of extraterrestrial creatures, derogatorily referred to as “prawns”, from District 9, a military-guarded slum in Johannesburg, South Africa, to an internment camp outside the city. 2010 Oscar Nominations The stage is set for a David vs. blue Goliath battle at the Oscars, as independently made Iraq-war drama “The Hurt Locker” faces off with the most expensive movie of all time, “Avatar.” Both movies were nominated for nine Academy Awards, including best picture in a newly expanded field of 10, and best director. Other best picture nominees include “Precious – Based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “Up in the Air,” “The Blind Side,” “District Nine,” “An Education,” “A Serious Man,” and “Up.” In the top categories, “Up in the Air” scored the most nominations with six, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapated Screenplay, as well as Best Actor, for which George Clooney was nominated, and Best Supporting Actress nods for both Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick. “Precious” was right behind it with five.
