One month after Helena Bonham Carter was criticized for her multi-hued Vivienne Westwood dress and mismatched shoes at the Golden Globes, the King’s Speech star toned down her look for Sunday’s Academy Awards.

Walking the red carpet at L.A.’s Kodak Theatre, the Best Supporting Actress nominee, 44, told E!’s Ryan Seacrest she wanted to keep the night’s focus on her critically-acclaimed film.
“I got together with our costume designer Colleen Atwood and thought it would be nice to celebrate film rather than fashion,” Carter said of her demure black design.

Carter — who walked the carpet with her director beau Tim Burton — admitted she had one qualm about the 1800s-inspired LBD.
“I’ve got a bit of a complex with my bum, so I thought I’d make it bigger,” the actress – who previously joked her Oscar design would be a “catastrophe” — told Seacrest.

The nominee’s final look drew high praise from E! Fashion Police commentator Kelly Osbourne.
“I adore you and I love the way you dress,” Osbourne gushed to the British actress. “You set a standard and you don’t care what people think and I’m obsessed with you!”

‘Twas the night before Oscars, and all through Hollywood — well, everybody was stirring!
Although Sunday is the biggest, longest and wildest night of the year in Tinseltown, celebs had anything but a quiet evening at home the night before.

L.A.’s Soho House was the white-hot site of Weinstein Film’s pre-Oscar bash (co-sponsored by Mont Blanc), where Oscar front-runner Colin Firth greeted countless well-wishers for his performance in The King’s Speech.

Also mingling, drinking and nibbling pass-arounds? Kate Walsh, Taylor Swift’s new pal Chord Overstreet, Gerard Butler, Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Phillippe, Bradley Cooper and Renee Zellweger (plus Cooper’s mom!), Leonardo DiCaprio and love Bar Rafaeli, Cameron Diaz (who introduced herself to Camilla Belle), Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky (who swept the Independent Spirit Awards earlier that night), Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and many more.
Meanwhile, over at Madeo restaurant in West Hollywood, Chanel’s pre-Oscar dinner — a sit-down affair — also saw its share of big-time stars. Mom-to-be Rachel Zoe (she’s nine months pregnant!) sipped a club soda with husband Rodger Berman and chatted about dressing her client Anne Hathaway for her big night. Emma Roberts yukked it up with Twilight star Elizabeth Reaser. Drew Barrymore and new man Will Kopelman greeted Juliette Lewis, while January Jones told a pal “I”m starving!” Naomi Watts, Rashida Jones and Ginnifer Goodwin (who gabbed with a girlfriend about her wedding plans) also supped at Madeo. Redhead-turned-blond Emma Stone summed up Oscar fever perfectly to a friend: “This weekend is fun — but very tiring!”

The big destination one night earlier: Chateau Marmont in Hollywood. On hand for that dance-heavy bash, where DJ Jesse Marco spun tunes for the crowd: single gal Scarlett Johansson, newsmaking teen Miley Cyrus, Mila Kunis, mom-to-be Natalie Portman, Halle Berry and love Oliver Martinez, Ryan Gosling, Rob Pattinson, Kristen Stewart . . and James Franco, co-host (and Best Actor nominee) at Sunday’s big night.
